Boss Battle Guide: Malchor’s Leap, Orr

As you move through Guild Wars 2, you face a whole world of content rich in variety and opportunity. But once you start reaching content tailored for the final ten levels of the game, you will face challenges unlike anything you’ve conquered to that point.
In the three zones of Orr, there are no hearts to renown; this is Orr afterall. The world is shattered, stripped of character and devoid of life… until you arrive.

Then things get crazy.
The contents of this article contain spoilers. Proceed only if you are okay with that.
Malchor’s Leap contains the following breakdown of locations to collect:
  • 13 waypoints,
  • 37 points of interest,
  • 15 skill point challenges, and
  • five vistas.
The zone is massive, and within it are two gargantuan battles that have dramatic effects both on the zone in its entirety and in your ability to progress through the game.
Central to completing the zone is defeating two bosses within relatively close proximity to one another: a Possessed Statue of Dwayna within the Cathedral of Zephyrs and a Corrupted High Priestess of Lyssa within the Cathedral of Eternal Radiance.
From where you begin this zone, you will eventually head to the Wren Waypoint at the Garden of Ilya (at the southwestern corner of the “access” note on the map above). From there, you will walk up to an acres-wide platform that is as impressive as it is dangerous. Enchanted weapons come at you from all directions, catapults launch you around (and knock you off, sending you plummeting to the ground below, if you’re not careful) and three seals protect your target to complete this massive event.
To take down the seals, you will need to attack three points (each are noted on the map). Each seal provides energy for a protective barrier surrounding the High Priestess, and taking them offline simply requires you to attack and kill everything there, and follow the seal’s objectives (i.e. resurrect these people, destroy those objects) to release them from the control of the Risen.
This is where the event gets challenging. All three seals are well protected, so while the task is simple, you will need the support of at least a party of other players to take it over. An ideal scenario would include around ten people to take the point offline and defend it from the ensuing Risen assault. It can be done with five relatively skilled players.
It would be too easy, however, to take one team of five players and have them take over and defend each of the three seals in a row. In most cases, as you make your way to one, another under Tyrian control gets attacked. Therefore, to bring the priestess’ shield down, you will need three teams of five or more players to each take a seal, knock it down and keep it down. Once you accomplish that, the shields will drop, and all teams – it will take all teams – will need to move on the priestess.
The priestess has an irritating protective measure that perpetually dazes all foes for a set period of time, once a second. While players within the agro range (which conveniently covers the entire pad the priestess is on) can’t do anything, Risen are spawned in numbers so great that they fill the area. As soon as the daze debuff drops, expect to use as much AoE spells as you and the players around you can manage to clear out all of the Risen as quickly as possible so all attacking players can take the priestess down in relatively short order.
Once you clear the pad of all foes, a karma vendor selling gorgeous level 80 armor sets becomes available, and a skill point challenge just waits to be communed with.
In this event chain, you will met Malchor, the gentle ghost who’s name is borrowed by the zone you are in. As you will find, Malchor has been crushing on Dwayna since his death, and it is your task to take him to a nearby Dwayna statue. After an intense battle, a seal will be broken, bringing an end to all corrupted Dwayna statues throughout the area.
First, you will trigger the event by talking to Historian Vermoth at the location outlined above as “Dwayna Battle.” She will tell you about Malchor, a spirit who is protecting the corrupted altar with his energy. She explains that you must get Malchor, bring him to the statue and have him take the seal down. Expect to do this with a minimum of five people, preferably more.
You will find Malchor in the water area outlined above, surrounded by several incomplete Dwayna statues (did I mention that he’s been crushing on Dwayna?). It will take some fighting to dent his resolve, but you will eventually force him to join you at the shrine.
Along the way, you will face ambushes and several points where Malchor will effectively change his mind and turn on you. He is not an easy foe to take care of, and those who attempt to intervene in your journey are no picnic either.
Once he is at the shrine (the location of the battle), he will turn on you once more – this time occupying the statue and turning it against you. As the battle begins, a number of enchanted weapons will flank you. Deal with the additional foes, and then concentrate your fire on Dwayna. Like any boss battle, persistence and careful attention to your surrounding environment will effectively make short work of the corrupted statue.
Once you defeat her, a karma vendor selling gorgeous level 80 armor sets similar to the ones available from the end-point of Eternal Radiance becomes available, and a skill point challenge just waits to be communed with.
