Guildhead Launches 3D Model Viewer

For those of us who tend to obsess over how our characters look, Guildhead has just added more fuel to the fire with their new 3D Model Viewer. Imagine getting to see whether or not the epic item of your dreams will go with your ensemble.
For now though, it looks as if weapons are all that is available, so keep checking back for updates! Way to go Guildhead!

Lock & Key: The Next Step

Welcome Back Thieves! I hope that you’ve survived your first week-or-so in the world of Tyria. I know I’ve enjoyed myself tremendously. Finally putting the time into a Thief I could call my own was extremely satisfying. Having reached level 38 at the time I am writing this, I’ve started to encounter a few things which were outside of our grasp in the Beta Weekend Events. This week, we’ll discuss these ‘mid-level’ elements, such as sigils, dungeons and more!

While I had seen them in the beta weekend events, Runes never really got much of my time. This was mainly due to the fact that I knew my character was destined for deletion, and frankly, WvW was absorbing much of my attention.  However, now that I’ve got my trusty Thief Mrell up to the level where he is seeing sigils, I figured they’d be more important to take note of.
Boy was I missing out before then.
Runes, to me, seem to be almost as important as Traits or Utility skills in your Thief’s build. The set bonuses some of these items offer are superb. Currently, I’m running with the Minor Rune of Divinity. It gives a lovely set bonus of +3 to all stats and a 1% Critical Damage buff. If you’ve got two then this is doubled.  In addition, I’d love to have a pistol with each of the Racial Runes (i.e. the Minor Rune of Grawl Slaying), just sitting in my bank at some point in the future.
One tip I will give you all is to invest in a Master Salvage Kit early on. Keep it in your bank, and when you get to town, salvage those items you’ve found with Runes you like. I’ve already acquired quite a little collection.
No matter which Runes you choose to use, make sure you spend the time and think about them. They can be a great addition to your gear and can make a surprising difference in just how powerful your character can end up being.

Dungeons:
Ah yes, Dungeons. These staples of PvE endgame are the way in which we can test our ability, our team work, and our capacity for stress. We got a taste of what is to come when we ventured into the depths of the Ascalon Catacombs in the Beta Weekends, but we’ve got far greater encounters ahead of us. While I’ve not yet ventured into the halls of Minister Caudecus’ Manor, I’ll offer you a few tips I accrued from my runs of the first dungeon.
-          Collaborate with your Team: May seem like a given to some players, but communication is key. It is better to be oversaturated with people ideas and plans than stuck in a position where you don’t know what is going on.
-          When a Thief is Downed, They aren’t Out: Are downed skills have to be some of the best in the game. Simply teleporting to the side, and then pelting the enemy with knives is both helpful to your team, since it does damage, and helpful to you, since it gets you closer to standing up again.
-          Group Stealth: This can be very useful. Made a bad pull? Throw down a group stealth and you may just have an opportunity to reset things. Personally, I like Blinding Powder, but Shadow Refuge or Combo Fields are a good way to go as well.
-          Scorpion Wire: Have this Skill available. Being able to pick an enemy out of a melee, or pull one member of a mob of enemies to your group can be a life-saving move. Four mobs might be too many, but three might just be doable.
Those are just some of the tips I can offer about Dungeoneering in GW2. I’m sure that once I get a few dungeons under my belt, this topic will be revisited in great depth.
Factions:
Just join the Order of Whispers. You are a Thief, so it fits perfectly. The story is great, and the characters (well, really just one…) are fantastic.  Honestly, this is some of the best stuff I’ve experienced in the game so far, and it does a superb job of making you feel like a covert spy. Trust me…
General Tactics:
-          Dodge Sparingly:. There are more than a few times I’ve been knocked down simply because I dodged when I didn’t have to. Strafing and zig-zaggin’ however, I give you permission to do as much as You’d like…
-          Elites can, in fact, be used frequently:  Don’t worry about saving these. There have been more than a few times that the use of Thieves Guild has saved my life.
-          Learn your limits: You have stealth, which means you’re able to easily escape from most situations. Learning which situations you can handle and which you can’t can be incredibly important. It means you won’t be dying as much, which is always good….
Next week, I’ll spend some time discussing the leveling process from 1 to 40 in depth, talking about the four ways you can play a Thief while leveling…

Game Status Update 8/31

ArenaNet has published another game status update detailing their efforts on several of the issues that have been affecting players and game play.  One of the biggest updates that standout is the addition of email authentication triggered by login location which is always a good thing. Outside that, there are updates on WvW, some scheduled downtime, news about guild fixes and all sorts of other juicy tidbits. So without further adieu, here is what ArenaNet had to say

Account Security
Protect your account! We’ve seen hackers systematically scan email addresses and passwords harvested from other games, web sites, and trojans to see if they match Guild Wars 2 accounts. We’ve taken steps to protect our players from this, but we need your help too. Make sure that you use a strong, unique password for Guild Wars 2 that you’ve never used anywhere else. For best security, use a unique email address too, and see our blog post for more tips.

Email authentication
We now have email authentication enabled for all players who have validated their email addresses. This feature sends an email whenever it detects a login attempt to your account from a location you haven’t played from before, asking you to allow or deny the login.
We’ve learned of an incompatibility between email authentication and older versions of Internet Explorer. We’re working on a fix, which we expect to deploy tomorrow.
If you’re not receiving account verification emails or account authentication emails, please check your junk/spam folders, and add noreply@guildwars2.com to your safe senders list.

Parties, guilds, etc.
We’ve made significant fixes to parties and guilds. However, you may still see intermittent outages. These outages cause symptoms such as party members not appearing on the map, party members not staying in the same overflow servers as they travel between maps, and guild invites not working.

Trading Post
Yesterday we opened the Trading Post for a random, rotating 50% of users. After gathering data from yesterday’s tests, we applied a number of fixes and performance improvements, and are preparing a larger-scale test today.

Tournament Rewards
We believe we’ve addressed the problem with tournament chests not appearing. Let us know if you still see any issues with this.

World v. World
We’re aware the world v. world matches have not been resetting properly. We’re preparing an update to fix this. Once the issue is fixed, we’ll start running 24-hour matches to balance servers.

Worlds
We added three new worlds in Europe yesterday, three new worlds in America today, and increased the population limits on all worlds.

Overflow
During this initial surge of high concurrency, and especially while most characters are low-level and thus playing in the same starting areas, it’s common for players to be directed to overflow servers. If you want to play with a friend, but you’re not on the same overflow servers, you can form a party together, then right-click on your friend’s portrait in the party list and click “join”.
We expect the use of overflow servers to naturally subside as players spread out more through the world.

Botting
We suspended accounts of 750 players running bots. We’re ramping up and will soon apply permanent bans for cases of substantial botting.

Exploits
If you discover an exploit in the game, do not exploit it or publicize it, but instead please notify us immediately at this new email address: exploits (at) arena (dot) net.

Forums
Our most important priority at the moment is to ensure that the game runs stably and flawlessly. So as to not create additional demand on our infrastructure and on our programming team, we made the decision not to open the forums until the initial mass influx of players has calmed down a bit.

Wiki
We increased wiki server capacity to address issues users are seeing. We plan to start posting these updates to the wiki, as long as the wiki can handle the traffic.
Next software updates
We’re making non-disruptive changes throughout the day. We’ll publish the next back-end server update tonight at midnight Seattle time. The game may be unavailable for approximately 20-60 minutes while we perform this update.

Guild Wars 2 “Fear Not This Night” Song Now Available

Guild Wars 2 “Fear Not This Night” Song Now Available

by David Campbell on August 17, 2012
The first song from Guild Wars 2 is now available on iTunes. Produced and composed by  Jeremy Soule and performed by Asja, Fear Not This Night is a hauntingly beautiful song from the Guild Wars 2 Soundtrack.
An anthem of the enigmatic sylvari, Fear Not This Night is a song of hope sung by the mystical Pale Tree. Asja’s soft yet soaring voice perfectly embodies the noble spirit of the sylvari, and the song is symbolic of your hero’s journey to defend Tyria from the threat of the Elder Dragons.
Fear Not This Night appears on Jeremy Soule’s epic four-disc Original Guild Wars 2 Soundtrack as well as on the Best of Guild Wars 2 Soundtrack in the Collector’s Edition. This song is available at a special promotional price of $.99 through Monday, August 20, after which it will be $1.29.
We’ll talk more about the Guild Wars 2 soundtrack and Fear Not This Night in an upcoming interview with Jeremy Soule, but for now, head over to iTunes and check it out!
